Learning Corner: Coaching in Five Minutes: Turning a Status Update into Growth

Estimated Time to Complete: 15 minutes to learn, 5 minutes to use

Objective:
To use a short version of the GROW coaching model so status updates become chances for your people to think and grow.

Materials Needed:

  • A one-on-one or status meeting on your calendar this week

  • A sticky note with the four GROW questions

Activity Steps:

1. Learn the four questions (5 minutes)
Goal: What are you trying to get done? Reality: Where does it stand right now? Options: What could you try? Way forward: What will you do next, and by when?

2. Hold back the answer (2 minutes)
Before your next status update, decide that you will ask before you advise. Write a reminder on your sticky note.

3. Use it live (5 minutes)
When someone brings you a problem, walk through the four questions. Let them do most of the talking. If you do share an idea, offer it as one option among others.

4. Reflect (3 minutes)
Afterward, jot down what the person came up with on their own and how the conversation felt compared to your usual approach.

Key Takeaways:

  • Coaching can fit inside five minutes.

  • Asking first builds people's confidence and judgment.

  • Your people often have better answers than they get credit for.

Reflection Prompt:

Who on your team would grow the most if you asked one more question before giving your answer?
