Learning Corner: Delegation That Grows People: The Five Levels

Estimated Time to Complete: 20 minutes

Objective:
To delegate one task this week at the right level, so the person grows and you get time back.

Materials Needed:

  • Your task list

  • One person on your team you want to develop

Activity Steps:

1. Learn the five levels (3 minutes)
Level 1: Do exactly what I ask. Level 2: Look into it and report back. Level 3: Recommend what we should do. Level 4: Decide and tell me what you did. Level 5: Own it fully.

2. Pick the task and person (5 minutes)
Choose one task you do that someone else could learn. Think about who would grow from it.

3. Choose the level (5 minutes)
Pick the level that matches their experience. Start a level lower if the stakes are high, and plan to move up.

4. Have the conversation (7 minutes)
Explain the task, the level and why you chose them. Agree on when you'll check in and what "done" looks like.

Key Takeaways:

  • Naming the level removes guesswork for both of you.

  • Delegation is a development tool.

  • Moving someone up a level over time builds confidence and trust.

Reflection Prompt:

What is one task you hold on to that someone else is ready for? What is stopping you from handing it off?
