Learning Corner: Explaining a Change with a Story

Estimated Time to Complete: 25 minutes

Objective:
To craft a simple story that helps your team understand and connect with a change you need them to support.

Materials Needed:

  • A change you need to explain

  • A notebook

Activity Steps:

1. Start with the why (5 minutes)
Write down why this change matters. Who does it help? What problem does it solve?

2. Find a real moment (8 minutes)
Think of a specific moment, a customer, a student or a teammate, that shows the problem. Real details make a story stick.

3. Build the story (8 minutes)
Use three parts: what it was like before, what happened that showed the need for change, and what will be better after.

4. Practice (4 minutes)
Tell the story out loud in under two minutes. Trim anything that slows it down.

Key Takeaways:

  • Stories help people feel the reason for a change.

  • Real, specific moments are more convincing than general claims.

  • Short stories get retold. Long ones get forgotten.

Reflection Prompt:

What story could you tell that would help your team see why the change you're leading matters?
