Learning Corner: Leading the People You Used to Work Beside

Estimated Time to Complete: 30 minutes

Objective:
To have open conversations with former peers about how your working relationship will change, and to set clear expectations.

Materials Needed:

  • A list of former peers you now lead

  • A 20-minute conversation with each

Activity Steps:

1. Reflect first (5 minutes)
Write down what you valued about working beside each person and what will need to change now.

2. Name it out loud (5 minutes)
In each conversation, acknowledge the change directly: "Things are different now that I'm leading the team, and I want to talk about how we make this work."

3. Ask what they need (10 minutes)
Ask: "What do you need from me as your manager? What would you hate to see change?" Listen closely.

4. Set expectations (10 minutes)
Share what you'll expect from them and how you plan to lead. Agree on how you'll raise concerns with each other.

Key Takeaways:

  • Naming the shift makes it easier for everyone.

  • Asking what people need shows respect.

  • Clear expectations prevent awkward moments later.

Reflection Prompt:

What is one relationship that feels harder since your role changed? What conversation would help?
