Learning Corner: Feedback That Lands: The Situation-Behavior-Impact Method
Estimated Time to Complete: 20 minutes
Objective:
To prepare one piece of positive feedback and one piece of developmental feedback using the Situation-Behavior-Impact model from the Center for Creative Leadership.
Materials Needed:
Two people you want to give feedback to
A notebook
Activity Steps:
1. Learn the model (3 minutes)
Situation: when and where it happened. Behavior: what the person said or did, described like a video camera would see it. Impact: the effect it had on you, the team or the work.
2. Write positive feedback (5 minutes)
Pick something someone did well recently. Write it in three short sentences using the model.
3. Write developmental feedback (7 minutes)
Pick something you want someone to change. Use the same three parts. Add a question at the end, like "What was going on for you?" so it becomes a conversation.
4. Deliver one this week (5 minutes)
Choose which one to share first. Put a reminder on your calendar to give it within 48 hours.
Key Takeaways:
Specific feedback is easier to hear than general feedback.
Describing behavior keeps the conversation away from judging the person.
Positive feedback teaches people what to repeat.
Reflection Prompt:
When did someone give you feedback that changed how you work? What made it land?
