Learning Corner: Giving Feedback Upward
Estimated Time to Complete: 20 minutes
Objective:
To prepare a piece of feedback for your manager that helps the work and strengthens the relationship.
Materials Needed:
One thing you'd like your manager to start, stop or continue
A notebook
Activity Steps:
1. Ask permission (3 minutes)
Plan to open by asking: "Would it be helpful if I shared something I've noticed?" Most managers say yes, and asking shows respect.
2. Use specifics (7 minutes)
Write the feedback using situation, behavior and impact. Keep the focus on the work and the team.
3. Add what you'd like (5 minutes)
Suggest what might help, framed as a request: "It would help me if..."
4. Close with appreciation (5 minutes)
End by naming something you value about working with them. It keeps the relationship strong.
Key Takeaways:
Asking permission makes upward feedback easier to hear.
Specific feedback focused on the work feels less personal.
Good managers want to know how they can help their teams.
Reflection Prompt:
What is one thing your manager does that you'd like more of? Have you told them?
