Learning Corner: Who's Ready Next? A Quick Bench Check

Estimated Time to Complete: 30 minutes

Objective:
To identify who on your team could step into bigger roles and what each person needs to get ready.

Materials Needed:

  • A list of your team members

  • A simple table with three columns: Ready now, Ready in 1 to 2 years, Needs more time

Activity Steps:

1. List key roles (5 minutes)
Write down two or three roles on your team that would be hard to fill if someone left.

2. Place people (10 minutes)
For each role, place team members in the table. Base it on what you've seen them do, and watch for bias toward people who are simply louder or more visible.

3. Name the gaps (10 minutes)
For each person who could be ready in 1 to 2 years, write one skill or experience they need.

4. Plan one step (5 minutes)
Pick one development step for each person, like a stretch project, mentoring or training, and add it to your next one-on-one.

Key Takeaways:

  • Planning your bench early reduces risk.

  • Looking at what people have done helps reduce bias.

  • Development works best when it's specific.

Reflection Prompt:

If you left your role tomorrow, who would step in? What would they need from you right now?
