Learning Corner: Helping Two Team Members Work Through Conflict

Estimated Time to Complete: 45 minutes

Objective:
To guide two team members through a conversation that helps them understand each other and agree on a way forward.

Materials Needed:

  • A private room or video call

  • Thirty minutes with each person beforehand if possible

Activity Steps:

1. Meet with each person first (10 minutes each)
Ask what happened, how it's affecting them and what they want going forward. Listen without taking sides.

2. Set ground rules (5 minutes)
In the joint meeting, agree on a few rules: one person talks at a time, describe actions instead of labels, and focus on what happens next.

3. Let each person share (15 minutes)
Each person shares their view while the other listens. Then ask the listener to sum up what they heard before responding.

4. Agree on next steps (5 minutes)
Ask: "What would you each like to do differently?" Write down agreements and set a follow-up date.

Key Takeaways:

  • Conflict is easier to solve before it becomes about the person.

  • Having each person sum up the other's view builds understanding.

  • A follow-up date keeps agreements alive.

Reflection Prompt:

Is there tension on your team right now that you've been hoping will fix itself?
