Learning Corner: Listening at Three Levels
Estimated Time to Complete: 20 minutes
Objective:
To notice how you listen and practice listening for what the other person feels and needs, as well as what they say.
Materials Needed:
A partner for practice, or your next one-on-one
A notebook
Activity Steps:
1. Learn the three levels (3 minutes)
Level 1: Listening to yourself, thinking about your reply. Level 2: Listening to the other person's words. Level 3: Listening for feelings, energy and what is left unsaid.
2. Notice your default (4 minutes)
Think about your last few conversations. Which level were you at most of the time?
3. Practice (10 minutes)
In your next conversation, focus on Level 3. Notice tone, pace and pauses. Before you respond, reflect back what you heard, including the feeling: "It sounds like this has been frustrating."
4. Reflect (3 minutes)
Write down what you noticed. Did the other person share more than usual?
Key Takeaways:
People can tell when they are truly being heard.
Reflecting feelings helps people feel understood.
Better listening leads to better information and stronger trust.
Reflection Prompt:
Who in your life is a great listener? What do they do that makes you feel heard?
