Learning Corner: Noticing Disengagement Early

Estimated Time to Complete: 25 minutes

Objective:
To notice changes in energy or effort on your team and start a caring conversation before disengagement grows.

Materials Needed:

  • A list of your team members

  • A notebook

Activity Steps:

1. Scan your team (8 minutes)
For each person, think about the last month. Have you noticed changes: quieter in meetings, slower replies, less initiative, more frustration?

2. Pick one person (3 minutes)
Choose someone where you've noticed a shift.

3. Plan your opening (7 minutes)
Start with care and what you've noticed, without judgment: "I've noticed you've seemed quieter lately, and I wanted to check in. How are things going?"

4. Have the conversation (7 minutes)
Listen more than you talk. Ask what would help. Agree on one thing you can do.

Key Takeaways:

  • Disengagement often shows up in small ways first.

  • Leading with care opens the door to honest answers.

  • One conversation can change someone's whole experience of work.

Reflection Prompt:

Who on your team have you noticed pulling back? What's stopping you from checking in?
