Learning Corner: Saying No Without Burning Bridges
Estimated Time to Complete: 15 minutes
Objective:
To build a few go-to ways to say no, or not now, that protect your priorities and the relationship.
Materials Needed:
One request you want to decline or push back on
A notebook
Activity Steps:
1. Check the request (3 minutes)
Ask yourself: Does this fit my top priorities? What would I have to drop to do it?
2. Pick your response (5 minutes)
Choose one: a clear no ("I can't take this on and do it well"), a not now ("I can start this in May"), or a trade ("I can do this if I pause X. Which matters more?").
3. Add care (3 minutes)
Add one sentence that shows respect, like naming why the request matters or offering someone who might help.
4. Say it (4 minutes)
Practice it out loud once, then send or say it today.
Key Takeaways:
A thoughtful no protects your best work.
Offering a trade helps others see the real cost.
Kindness and boundaries can go together.
Reflection Prompt:
What is a request you said yes to recently that you wish you had pushed back on? What would you say now?
